Facebook is an advertising platform. So is Twitter. So is Instagram. So is YouTube. So is Reddit. So is TikTok (that’s the new one right?)
These platforms owe you nothing. They have no obligation to promote your content, regardless of how many followers you have. If you don’t pay, people won’t see your message.
The biggest reason not to bank on social media is that it’s a bad bet.
So what do you do instead?
Avoid thinking of social media as a way to promote yourself. Instead, think of it as a way to bring people together.
This is a slow and painful process. You’re not going to get 10,000 followers from a viral post. In reality, you’re probably never going to go “viral.” Even if you do, the traffic from this post will be fleeting. These people will be in and out.
To build a community is to build a tribe. With this, you have to be specific. You have to find a particular problem to solve. Once people start telling their friends about you, you will have something way more valuable than Instagram followers.
You will have sales. Actual sales. Real money and a real business doing real work for real people.

That’s less than a Starbucks cappuccino.
