Why Your Goals Might Be Holding You Back
It's not about determination, it's about flexibility
On Friday, I listened to an episode of Prof G Markets
At the end of the episode, Prof G made a point about not getting too set in your goals. His argument was that when you fully invest yourself in one outcome, like getting into a specific college or landing a certain job, the danger is that if it does not happen, the emotional impact can be so great that it cripples you.
It happens all the time, and our society rewards singleness of purpose.
For me, it has always been easier to let life make the hard choices for me and be flexible in accepting what my higher power wants for me.
I will give you some examples.
Being A Writer
When I was a kid, all I wanted to be was a writer. I was, and still am, an avid reader. I read every day. I dreamed of having my book published in the airport bookstore. First, I wanted to be like Roald Dahl, then Chuck Palahniuk, then Emerson, then Neil Gaiman. Then I wanted to be a history writer, inspired by Margaret MacMillan.
Guess what? That did not happen.
God had other plans for me.
After discovering Copyblogger, I learned that I could be a writer without a book deal or a bestselling novel.
Now, I am by definition, a writer.
In fact, by most accounts, I am one of the most successful writers out there.
It does not look the way I had planned, but I am a writer nonetheless.
Being An Entrepreneur
I always knew I would be an entrepreneur. When my dad was laid off from his job when I was younger, it completely changed my outlook on life. I knew with absolute certainty that I would never be in a position where I depended on a paycheck.
But my plan was to be a contractor.
When I was 21, I started taking on my own jobs. I bought a van, invested in tools, and created a mobile workstation. I had a knack for picking up new business. Sales came easier to me than I expected. It was always hard for me to talk to strangers, but for some reason, when it came to sales, I felt natural.
Entrepreneurship was never an option for me. It was the only way.
However, in 2013, at the age of 24, I found myself building an online business called Sober Nation. I slowly discovered this entire world that existed on the internet, and the rest is history.
When I was younger, I put so much pressure on myself to have a contracting business. It was my way out. I convinced myself that if I did not build it, I would be a failure.
Yet, once again, the universe had other plans for me.
I stayed open, humble, honest, and willing to accept that I might not know what is best for me.
Chances are, you do not know what is best for you either.
I Have No Idea Where I Am Going
I never thought I would get out of Philadelphia.
Never did I think I would live in Fort Lauderdale for 10 years. I never thought I would meet a girl from Massachusetts, fly her to Florida, and move her in with me on a whim.
I never thought I would live in Nashville. I did not even know what Nashville was.
When I was very young, I used to watch a VHS tape of Incubus playing at Red Rocks. Red Rocks looked like a magical fantasy land on the other end of the world, some version of Narnia that I would never see.
Last month, Jules took me to Red Rocks to see Incubus play.
Never did I think I would be here.
The point is, none of you know what is best for you. You do not know if your goal or your ultimate outcome is what will help you lead your most ideal life. You have no clue.
I believe it is great to have an ultimate outcome. It is something I teach in The Launchpad. It is ideal to have a North Star to help guide your decision making.
But the reality is you have very little control over your life. You are not in control. It is much easier and more useful to remain open to the opportunities that come your way.
Life is a river. You can fight the current or let it take you where you are going. You can struggle to control or enjoy the ride. Either way, you will get to the ocean.
Love you guys. Talk to you tomorrow.
