Why I Write About Money So Much
It's personal
I got a text message from a loved one the other day. They sent me a meme and said it reminded them of me. This made me feel good.
The truth is, it’s always been uncomfortable for me to so transparently talk about money, my business, my experiences, and my shortcomings. But I’ve always known it’s the right thing to do.
Today, I’ll tell you why.
LFG 🔥
How to Make a Lot of Money
Money is just like everything else. If you want to get good at making it, you need to practice.
People who make a lot of money think about money all the time. It’s the same way professional athletes constantly think about improving their game or how writers are always in their heads, outlining their next piece or structuring their next novel.
You are what you repeatedly do.
We all know this on a deep level. We know that the most valuable things in life must be earned. There’s no such thing as a free lunch. If you want health, wealth, and deep relationships, then you must acquire those things the hard way. There’s no way around it.
That’s why I “practice” money so much. That’s why I share my experience and do my best to learn from the failures and successes I’ve had along the way.
The same is true for you. If you want to make a lot of money, you need to become someone who deeply cares about money.
Anyone can make money. Some people might even get lucky and stumble their way into a large sum of money without sacrificing a lot to get it.
But only a few people ever become the type of person who makes money. Your brain, your habits, and your body will mold into the personality traits of someone who is good at making money.
It’s just like everything else. We just wish it wasn’t, because money and wealth carry a stigma.
Ridding Myself of the Shame of Money
When I got sober, I made the deliberate decision that I wanted to make a lot of money. It was a goal I set for myself, and the first thing I needed to do was rid myself of the guilt and embarrassment that money creates for a lot of people.
Our society worships money and shames it at the same time. We assume wealthy people take advantage of others to get rich, yet we idolize the status that wealth portrays.
How many times in your life have you seen someone drive by in a Mercedes or Bentley and thought, “That person looks like a douchebag?”
I used to do it all the time.
The judgement you pass on others is small time thinking. Writing every day helps me constantly evaluate myself and shed those parts of myself that want to keep me small.
When you write, you have to be honest. It’s almost impossible to lie to a blank page. You can lie to others with your voice and get away with it, at least for a little while. The inner critic doesn’t attack you as much when you lie out loud.
But if you lie to a blank page, that page will stare through you. It will penetrate the self-protective parts of you that wish so badly things were different than they really are.
For me, writing about money and success is a daily practice that forces me to grow and become a better person. The more you put the truth out in the open, the less painful the truth becomes.
This is not easy.
If everyone could do it, everyone would do it.
Writing forces me to be honest and writing about business and money forces me to face my life’s challenges head-on.
Passing Down This Knowledge to Those Who Look Up to Me
Financial stress can be crippling to a family. It’s not a trivial thing. If you’ve never lived through real financial pressure, you can’t understand the kind of anxiety and tension it creates in a home.
When I was growing up, I was always embarrassed by money. I felt like having money was for other people. That kind of life was something I thought I would never experience.
Luckily, my sobriety brought me into a fellowship of men who were all working hard to become better people. Through sheer luck, I found myself in a circle of men who had what I wanted. They were successful and humble, and they made wealth feel approachable and achievable.
Through their example, I started to believe that it was possible for me. I wasn’t destined to be some bottom of the barrel kid trudging his way through life. I could thrive. I could live in abundance.
I don’t know if I ever would have broken that mental barrier if I hadn’t found that group of men. Through their example, I started to believe in myself.
It’s a deep desire of mine to be that same kind of example for others.
Every day, I look at how many people read my emails, and the responsibility feels more and more real. I know some of you read this and think, “If he can do it, then I can do it.”
If I can be that person for you, that would be a gift from God.
If you want to keep it, you must give it away.
Love you guys. Thank you for believing in me.
Talk to you Monday.

Nice write-up.
Yeah, it's difficult for you to lie when spitballing your thoughts on a blank page.
