I’m currently sitting in the back of an Uber on the way to the airport.
The last two weeks have been hectic. Lots of traveling, packing, planning, and commotion.
I feel like I’m not where I want to be on some things, but I also feel like I have truly learned how to prioritize the important things when life gets busy so that I am always making progress.
Today, I will give you the cheat code on making progress, even when life is busy.
LFG. 🔥
Do What You Can
There are little pockets of time in every day that allow you to make progress. A great example of this is 15 minute workouts. As my life has gotten more full, and especially since the kiddos were born, it’s become more and more difficult to maintain a strict fitness protocell.
It’s hard to dedicate an hour and a half every day for the gym.
The way to continue to make progress is by doing what you can, when you can.
Have 15 minutes before your next meeting? Then do 50 burpees.
The seconds and minutes you need are all around you as long as you’re willing to take advantage of them.
Do What You Must
Yesterday, I wanted to record more videos for my Launchpad program and my Sales Training program. I wasn’t able to get it done.
There was a moment when I had to decide where to put my time. Recording videos seemed more fun, and more in line with where I want to be spending my time. But the reality is I had an important call to make and I had to focus on some deep work for a client.
The client work was more important. That was work that had to get done.
A lot of people struggle with this. We default to the easy enjoyable work.
In wrestling, we call this “eating the frog.” You start practice with the drills that you hate the most. As is always the case in life, the hardest work is the most important.
Do What Is Important
I’m sure you’ve heard me talk about the important urgent matrix before.
Successful people don’t get hung up on urgent work. They restrain themselves from spending all their time putting out fires and they focus on doing work that really advances their agenda.
It’s difficult to let fires burn, but if you ignore urgency and focus on what’s important, you will advance yourself leaps and bounds ahead of where you would be if all your time is spent running around fixing problems.
What’s difficult about this is accepting the fact that letting the metaphorical fires burn means upsetting some people. For example, yesterday I was delayed in responding to an email. I could feel the weight of the email hanging over me all day, but I knew the right thing for me to do was to focus my attention on the important work.
Once the important work is done, then you can do the urgent work.
Over a long enough timeline, the urgent work disappears because the important work built the foundation for meaningful results.
These Are The Tricks I Use
I am by no means a productivity expert or a self help expert. I’m a regular person like you, trying my best to figure it out.
However, there is no question that year after year, I continue to advance personally and financially. The reason for this is because of where I choose to spend my time and what I choose to focus on.
Not all work is created equal.
These maxims have helped me. I hope they will help you.
Love you guys. Talk to you tomorrow.
