The Surprising Power of Doing 1% Better Every Day
There are lessons of growth here.
I’m feeling excited and grateful this morning. Ever since leaving Stodzy, I have been on a pursuit of growth and exploration.
Growth is hard because it’s painful. Most of all, growth is uncertain.
But this morning, I’m going to pat myself on the back a bit and highlight some of the areas in which I have grown.
Hopefully you can use this as an opportunity to give yourself some grace as well.

1% Better Every Day
Hindsight is twenty twenty, right?
Looking back, it’s so clear to me how much anxiety I had over big problems that would arise in the business. There are reasons why those problems kept showing up, which is a different conversation entirely. But for myself, I struggled to tackle those problems slowly and methodically.
I’ve noticed that when we face big challenges, we want to solve them with big solutions.
But that doesn’t work, because big solutions create even bigger questions. There’s a huge gap between how things used to be and how they are now. Adjusting for that gap creates more problems.
The only way to make meaningful progress is a little bit at a time.
Over the last few months, I’ve forced myself to do this. I admit it was painful at first, because I would wake up feeling like I had the world on my shoulders. But over time, the pressure deflated. Now I can see things clearly.
The lesson here is an interesting one. When you try to solve problems with big solutions, it’s actually a form of self-protection. You’re trying to rid yourself of the pain you feel right now. It’s a weak-minded way of thinking and behaving.
It’s harder to sit in the discomfort, but sitting in that discomfort is required if you are going to do things right. It’s much easier to make a big move and temporarily relieve the anxiety, but that’s obviously a short term solution that only buries you deeper into a hole.
The slow and steady method releases anxiety because the problem eventually gets solved.
It’s a duality, and once you see it, you can’t unsee it.
Fighting The Feeling Of MOOOAAARRRRR
I’m not sure when it happened, but at some point over the last few months, I was able to quiet that voice in my head telling me I need to do more, have more, work more, earn more, and be involved in more projects.
I haven’t signed a new deal in months. What’s great is that I have no intention of signing any new deals either.
I am very focused on what I have. In the past, my role was always sales. My purpose was to bring in new deals. More sales, more revenue, more contracts, etc.
I’m grateful that part of my life is behind me.
I love sales and I am so grateful for that experience because it was that churn and burn mentality that got me to where I am today. But I don’t want to do it anymore. I want to live in focus and stillness.
I don’t think this will last forever. Life changes and opportunities come and go. But for now, I feel content working on what I am working on. It’s great.
Fully Trusting My Team Around Me
I’ve written about the book Who Not How so many times that I’m sure most of you are sick of hearing about it.
But really, that book totally changed the way I approach business.
When I wake up in the morning, the first thing I do is check on my team.
I have employees in Brazil, India, the Dominican Republic, the Philippines, and obviously in the states.
Building a team is challenging, because most of the time, new team members aren’t a great fit. But if you stick with it, you can create an infrastructure where you have people that are highly skilled and dependable.
My problem in the past was control. Even though I trusted my teammates, I still felt anxious that people weren’t doing their jobs right. Come to find out it was my constant questioning that took away the freedom people needed to make mistakes and learn how to develop their positions and departments.
We Should All Say More Nice Things About Ourselves
Writing this issue feels incomplete. The last nine months have brought the most growth I’ve felt and earned since the first few years of my sobriety. I’ve grown in so many ways, I don’t don’t have time
But for now, I’m glad I was able to show some grace to myself on the page.
It’s interesting how much we see the good in others but resist seeing the growth in ourselves. I would never tolerate anyone talking to me the way I talk to myself.
Why? Why do we do that? It’s not just me.
I’ll try my best to continue highlighting my moments of growth, along with my moments of learning.
The reality is that we’re all going to die, way sooner than we realize. So what’s the point in spending time in unnecessary pain?
Love you guys. Talk to you tomorrow.

Hi Tim, while I don't believe in the 1% improvement per day idea, I do firmly believe in setting ambitious but achievable personal and professional goals, in planning and disciplined execution and within that execution a consistent control and measurement of progress against your goal. Then you need to adjust your plans to change coming from the market/environment and often through your own learnings and experiences. "Survival of the fittest!". You further need a systematic approach to your personal life based on healthy habits as otherwise you won't develop the necessary habits in your professional life to be happy and successful. Today speed and hard work are overvalued while patience and smart work are undervalued. Digital and Artificial is overvalued, analogue and human is undervalued.
