The Power of Thinking Small (Why The Internet Has Lied To You)
The smaller you go, the bigger you grow.
I had coffee with a good friend yesterday.
My friend had recently sold his agency and was looking for advice on how to start a newsletter.
In our conversation, he spoke about building a personal holdings company that is specific to a particular city.
I loved the idea for two reasons.
First, because everyone knows how much I love local service businesses and the opportunity that exists with local search marketing. Second, because I loved the notion that there is opportunity everywhere and the smaller you go, the more you succeed.
The Myth Of More
The internet has tricked us into thinking that we need to grow. We need a bigger reach, a bigger audience, more exposure, and a wider net of opportunities. But my friend was telling me about how he feels that even within the small city that he lives in, there are so many potential businesses to buy, invest in, flip, or find valuable partnerships.
We were sitting at a coffee shop and I looked down the street and thought that there are millions of dollars of revenue running through this one city block.
There’s opportunity everywhere.
Focus Is The Superpower
I’ve fallen into this trap many times. I think and hope that I have learned the lesson enough times to stop making the mistake, but I am human and easily excitable.
The lesson is about the dangers of getting involved in projects that I know nothing about. I’ve been fortunate enough to avoid any catastrophic losses in my investing career, but that’s also because I don’t take high risk bets.
Regardless, almost all the losses I’ve taken in business happened when I tried to get involved in something that I didn’t have expertise in or a unique ability to execute within.
That’s why I stick to my lane.
I understand behavioral health. I know almost everything there is to know about it. I no longer have the desire to get involved in new exciting projects. I am content on growing my agency, and investing in other partnerships that will grow my portfolio.
The smaller my focus, the bigger my reach.
The Internet Has Tricked Us …
… because the internet made us believe that more is better.
Life has never been like this. We all know it’s better to have 5 close friends than 1000 acquaintances. It’s better to have one healthy meal than 500 cookies.
So for me, it’s about balance. I want to use the internet as a tool, but the internet is not a means within itself. There is no value in having a big internet following if it doesn’t translate into a close network of customers and relationships.
The same is true for you.
I encourage you to think small. I wish you a small circle and a close tribe. If there is something to strive for, I would like to think it’s better to be small, specific and helpful, than it is to be big, vague, and forgettable.
Love you guys. Talk to you tomorrow.
Tim
I Back Squatted 225
I have a lot left in the tank too, but even 5 years later I’m still nervous to re injure my back after my surgery.
I’ll continue to increase weight little by little.
I’ll take the W. I feel good about it.
