Anyway, before we left for the conference this morning, I had a conversation that I’ve been thinking about all day.
My Meeting With Google
I’ve spent millions of dollars on Google ads.
When you spend millions of dollars, Google wants to be your friend. This morning, me and a partner of mine had a meeting with a Google VP, and with some super smart woman who runs something about algorithms for the ad platform.
The woman’s name was Amy. She said something to me that I’ve been thinking about all day.
Google’s Voluntary Severance Program
Google recently offered buyouts to many of their employees. This is a humane way of telling employees that there are going to be layoffs, and if you would like, we’ll give you like 2 months of pay to leave voluntarily.
The problem with these programs is that you can’t offer them company wide, or else your best employees just find a higher paying job and take the money.
So voluntary severance programs are announced but they are not offered to every employee.
In this case, the program is designated for the search team. Google is reducing costs for search. The reason is obvious.

The Joke I Made In The Meeting
I told Amy that if she was going to be our account rep, then she wasn’t allowed to take the voluntary severance.
She looked at me and said “don’t worry, my team is growing.”
What does this mean?
It means Google is doubling down on their ad platform. They are building more infrastructure to monetize ads through AI mode, and cutting investments to run ads against organic search.
I am taking this seriously.
SEO is not dead. But ads are the present and the future.
