I’m 3 weeks into my June challenge.
I woke up early today and had a bit of time to reflect on how things are going. Today, I am sharing my reflections with you.
LFG. 🔥
There Is The Discipline Of Doing Things
When I do these challenges, it’s usually about doing something that I’m not doing. For example, I built in a daily habit of working out, doing my ice baths, and writing every day.
I already do these things, but a daily habit adds a level of commitment and forced discipline because we all experience days when we just don’t feel like doing it.
For instance, when the day is packed, and the kiddos just fell asleep and it’s 8:30. That’s when I want to get a cocoa tea and watch The Last Of Us with Jules. But during my challenge, I need to force myself to go sit in freezing cold water for 4 minutes.
It’s all fun and games until moments like that. When it’s late and it’s dark out and I’m sitting by myself in a giant bucket of freezing water.
It’s so easy to just skip the day.
That’s discipline.
There Is Also The Discipline Of Not Doing Things
When we were in Plymouth, Jules brought something to my attention that I didn’t like. She mentioned how I had been building a bad habit of watching YouTube.
This didn’t make me feel good, because in my life, I’ve been very intentional about not getting hooked on social media. I only use it for work, I don’t have it on my phone, and I avoid at all costs looking at pictures of men and women with perfect bodies that are designed to make me feel bad about myself.
But YouTube is different, or at least that’s what I told myself.
For me, YouTube is about watching news about The Eagles, business and marketing content, and following my favorite book review nerds, science creators, and history dorks.
YouTube isn’t toxic, right?
Then I realized I was treating it almost like trashy TV. A way to zone out and distract myself from what’s important.
I mean really, do I need to know about every single update on The Eagles offseason?
The answer is no.
The Best Part About The Challenge Has Been Taking Ownership Of My Focus
Yes, I love that my abs are bulging out and I love that I’m building the discipline to jump in freezing water every day. I feel good about it.
But more than anything, I’m glad that I’m not wasting time on things that don’t matter. I’ve turned my YouTube time into reading time, and I’ve already finished The Lost Symbol and The Autobiography of Ben Franklin since I started the challenge.
My mind is clearer, less anxious, and more focused on the task at hand.
We all spend so much time thinking about things we should be doing.
I should be working out
I should be working harder
I should be posting more content
blah blah blah
But what if the most important choices we make are the things we don’t do. How much improvement can we create in our lives simply by removing what is not useful to us.
Positivity will naturally fill the void.
Love you guys. Talk to you tomorrow.
