The 3 Writers Who Taught Me Everything I Know
A tribute
We got to Massachusetts late last night. The flight was awful. The Sweet Girl randomly decided to go full Demogorgon for the entire 4 hours.
I’m sitting here thinking, “Do I have to write my issue today?”
Yes, I do.
Today, I’m shouting out my three writing idols and thanking them for the inspiration to push through when I don’t want to.
LFG. 🔥
1. Seth Godin
Seth Godin changed my life. I got to interview him back when I had my podcast. I remember thinking, “There’s no way I can accurately articulate to this person how much of an impact he has had on me.”
The book Linchpin in particular was a game changer.
Linchpin taught me that the skills that matter most in life are the ones that can’t be measured. It taught me how to be indispensable.
I can do things that no one else can do. Not because I’m smarter or more talented, but because I have combined my life experience with a particular skill set that makes me one of one.
Godin has written a blog post every single day for something like 15 years.
Crazy.
2. Fred Wilson
Fred Wilson is a venture capitalist and the founder of Union Square Ventures. He started a daily blog almost 15 years ago, and although he doesn’t post daily anymore, he’s remained consistent and top of mind.
What Fred taught me is that the blog itself doesn’t have to be a business or even a media company.
The blog is simply a way to get involved in the conversation.
This is the approach I’ve taken with my blog. And although I obviously sell my products through my newsletter, the real value of my daily writing habit has been the clarity of thought and the reputation it has garnered me.
My blog has brought me so many indirect opportunities that I can’t even count.
Fred Wilson became a legendary venture capitalist in large part because he would share his thoughts, experiences, insights, and ideas about the companies he was investing in. This brought him a huge following, which led to more investing opportunities.
This is how I approach it as well, and it’s paid off in spades.
3. Austin Kleon
Austin showed me that there are no rules.
Most of us love the idea of having a consistent template or a newsletter that follows the same framework. We love consistency and creating a recognizable brand.
Austin throws all that out the window.
Every day, Austin publishes whatever is top of mind for him. One day he might be writing about Coconut The Owl, and the next day he could be writing about The Inflatable Man.
There are no rules.
I try to approach my writing with this mindset too.
There is no box to fill. The goal is to publish, to share your experience, and to use writing as a process to become a better person.
Thanks Guys
These three men, more than anyone, have influenced me and my habit of daily writing. I wish I could meet them in person, but if I never do, I hope their writing spirit gets to live on through me.
Love you guys. Talk to you tomorrow.
