Short Form Video Is Eating SEO. Time to Adapt or Die
If you can't beat em, then join em. Or something like that ...
I’ve decided I’m going to give short form video a real go.
I don’t like it, and I’m half hoping this experiment is a massive failure, but today I’ll explain my reasoning and why I’m attempting this challenge.
LFG. 🔥
Video Is Eating Up Organic Traffic
One of the most common questions I get is “do you think AI is destroying SEO?” I have a few thoughts on this.
First off, AI is destroying some SEO. For example, local SEO is more powerful than ever, for all the reasons I explained in this video. I’m highly invested in local, both for my agency and for the companies I’ve invested in.
However, AI is killing blogging. Not long ago, people would go to Google to ask questions through long tail search, like “what’s the best vacuum for me to buy” or “how to build an email list.”
I’m sad to say that this type of search is definitely being eaten up by AI. If you don’t believe me, look at the search traffic for Neil Patel, one of the most successful SEO driven sites and businesses in history.
So this is an adapt or die moment.
If I want to stay in growth mode and keep building my brand and companies, I need to go where the attention is.
Right now, that’s video.
Short Form Video Works If You Are Personal
I’m going to do something really stupid and talk about politics for a second.
Recently, a socialist candidate named Zohran Kwame Mamdani won the race for governor of New York City. The outcome was driven by a few things:
young people feeling like the system doesn’t have their best interests in mind
Cuomo no longer being relevant
rent in NYC being so extreme
But you could easily argue the real reason Mamdani won was because he embraced short form video and social media.
Mamdani spoke directly to the Gen Z population. He skipped traditional media outlets (which are obviously dying) and went straight to the source. But he did it in a way that was personal and relevant.
He didn’t cut up podcast clips or hack together content for the sake of views. Every video had a specific message.
So regardless of how I feel about Mamdani’s politics, I have to respect how he cracked the code and created a media entity of short form video that actually impacted his bottom line, which in this case, is votes.
If He Can Do It, I Can Do It
I’ve said publicly that I hate short form video. Long form is better in just about every way, especially for getting email signups that convert to sales.
Short form is mostly junk food. I hate junk food.
But now that I’ve seen a roadmap on how it can be done with intention, I’m willing to give it a shot.
So every day, I’m going to record a short form video. I’m going old school. No script, no studio, just me and a direct message to my audience.
What matters to me is whether these videos convert.
Will they lead to email signups?
Will they lead to sales?
Will they lead to more nuanced conversions like podcast bookings or speaking opportunities?
I have no idea, but like I said, I’m willing to try.
If it doesn’t work, I’ll kill the idea immediately. But I have a feeling there’s a way to do this that is intentional, valuable, and effective.
Adapt or die. That is the law of nature.
I’m putting my ego aside and doing what is best for my company.
Love you guys. Talk to you tomorrow.
