Put Yourself In A Position To Be Taken Seriously
Everyone starts from zero
Yesterday, we had our weekly coaching session for my Sales Training students.
There were some good questions asked that I’ve been thinking about all morning. I think they will be good learning experiences for you too.
“I Don’t Have That Kind Of Leverage Yet”
In the training session, we were talking about the follow up sequence you should use after booking an appointment with a prospect. The goal is to increase the show up rate for sales calls.
One of the methods is to send a “why you should work with me” video that gives the prospect a breakdown of what to expect during the call and highlights the benefits of joining your service, program, or product.
One of the students got vulnerable, which I really appreciate, and said…
“One of the things I struggle with is that I don’t have an audience and I don’t have the kind of leverage you have, so how do I present myself in that way where people take me seriously?”
It’s a good question, and it’s something you must deal with in order to position yourself as an authority.
Everyone Starts From Zero
When I started Sober Nation, I would write blog posts every day. In the beginning, I didn’t even tell anyone about it. I wrote a blog post every day and never told a soul what I was doing.
Eventually, people started commenting on my posts, and that’s how I discovered SEO. That’s when I realized there were other people out there who were struggling with the same things I was.
But it took me more than a year to get to that point. Back then, I didn’t have much going on. I bought a laptop from a pawn shop and would sit in my room in the dark, writing blog posts.
I had no idea it would turn into what it did, and I’m grateful for the experience. This is how I learned content marketing.
Content marketing is so effective because it automatically creates authority for you in your niche. If you put out enough content and do it in a way that helps you learn and present value to the marketplace, it is inevitable that you will eventually be taken seriously.
The hard part is that you don’t know when that will happen. It’s impossible to know when the work will yield results.
Blind Faith Is Required
There is no seeing into the future. You don’t know when your work will put you in a position to be taken seriously.
Most people work for a few weeks, get frustrated, say “this doesn’t work,” and then quit.
Those same people are usually the ones who are resentful and hold grudges against the people who pushed through that period of no man’s land to eventually find success.
It’s blind faith. You are working into the void with no promise of payoff or return. But blind faith is like a trial by fire. Only those who go through that process of uncertainty are the ones worthy of success. They have earned the right to be taken seriously.
Once you publish enough bad writing, you will eventually start publishing good writing. This is the point at which the world will open up to you.
Believe me, or don’t.
Just don’t pretend there isn’t a path forward for you if you are willing to delay gratification long enough to be taken seriously.
Love you guys. Have a great weekend. Talk to you Monday.
