No Matter What You Do, Some People Won't Like You

This was a hard lesson for me to learn

One of my many flaws is that I want people to like me.

Even worse, I get anxious when I feel like people are mad at me. Out of the Big 5 personality traits, this one is called “agreeableness.” I am an agreeable person, and I get uncomfortable with conflict.

That’s why it has always been tough for me when I come across people who are unhappy with my work.

As I’ve gotten older, this has changed. I don’t feel so obligated to please everyone anymore. I’ve come to realize that no matter what you do, you can’t please everyone.

My Teaching Style With Agency Clarity

Let me tell you a secret …

I am making all of this up as I go.

When I decided to give Agency Clarity a go, one of the things I was most nervous about was my ability to teach.

Idk if you’ve realized this about me, but I’m a bit scatterbrained, all over the place, and I live more or less on the fly. It works for me.

Anyway, when I put The Launchpad program on presale, people started buying and I needed to put the course together fast. I had never taught a curriculum like this before, and the truth is, I wasn’t sure exactly how I was going to do it.

So I did what I always do. I hit record and I published.

In truth, I’m pretty happy with how it all turned out. As always, now that it’s done, I see things I could have done better, and I’ll ultimately go back in and rerecord the lessons.

But I’m happy with it, and I think all the students are as well.

The Best Compliment I Got So Far

I was talking to someone inside the community. This person gave me a compliment that made me feel great about what I had created. This person said …

“I’ve taken a lot of courses and I hate them all. But I love your program because it feels like my friend is talking to me and teaching me. It’s not a course, it’s more like my buddy helping me out.”

YES!! I heard that and it filled me with happiness because that is always what I’m aiming for.

Whether I’m writing, teaching, or making YouTube videos, my goal is to come across as someone’s friend who is explaining something in an easily understood yet articulate way.

NAILED IT!

Literally 5 Minutes Later ⏱️

Someone inside the community messaged me. They were pretty rude and direct. Keep in mind, The Launchpad is not a monthly subscription. It’s a one-time fee, and for this person, I made the mistake of trying to help them out and splitting it into 6 payments.

Within the course of 20 minutes, I got one review from someone saying my teaching style felt like learning from a friend. And immediately after, someone else (who literally changed his name to “Done” in the platform just to remind me that he’s done) told me that I’m terrible.

Same product. Two different reactions.

The Lesson, Just Be Yourself

Because everyone else is already taken.

You can do what I did and spend half of your time morphing your personality and being a chameleon to try to please everyone.

Or you can bet on yourself, be the person you’re meant to be, and let the chips fall where they may.

Personally, I’m relieved I no longer lose sleep worrying about whether people like me or not. I still get anxiety sometimes when I feel like people are mad at me, but even with that, I can recognize that people generally aren’t mad at me. In reality, people usually aren’t thinking about me at all.

Most likely, they’re not thinking about you either.
