Today, I want to talk to you about the power of focus.
Over my career, I tried everything. I built dozens of websites, spun up niche brands, launched media properties, and chased trends in the hopes of finding a short cut.
Ultimately, everything came back to the same place and taught me the most important lesson in business.
Today, I am sharing it with you.

The Burden Of Choice
Whenever I describe my life to people I just meet, I often times hear the same reaction.
“Must be nice to do whatever you want, whenever you want.”
Yes, it is. I genuinely love the fact that my life is self-directed. I sleep, eat, lift, travel, and live my life fully on my terms.
Yet what people don’t see is that this freedom brings with it a hidden tax. I call it “the burden of choice.”
Most people live their lives on a conveyor belt. Someone else sets the agenda, defines the priorities, and absorbs the downside. Frankly, there is real peace in that setup. I genuinely believe that having unlimited choices is terrible for your mental health.
What do you do when you can do anything?
My job, as the owner of my companies is essentially to make choices. Everyone looks at me to make the right call.
That responsibility is what keeps me awake at 2 AM. No amount of research, seeking advice from others, or prayers up to god will help curb the anxiety because you never really know if you are making the right choices are not.
I would never trade this life, but the psychological toll is real.
Unlimited Choice Breeds Chronic FOMO
During my twenties and thirties, my biggest vulnerability was listening to everyone else’s playbook instead of finding my own.
I remember reading a tweet during Covid. It went something like … “the trick to being a good investor is making dozens of bets knowing a single outlier will return 1,000X.”
I remember this moment specifically. I thought “oh wow, this person is a great investor they have it figured out.”
I subsequently lost $400,000 in a group of healthcare investments that I knew in my gut were bad investments. (True story)
The hard truth is that mastery demands repetition. I have launched ventures that crashed immediately, projects that were just barely successful enough to drag on forever, and a few that printed so much cash I don’t even know what to do with it all.
Some people seem like they have it figured out right from the beginning. That was not my experience. I spent 15 years chasing curiosity and shiny objects just to stumble into the reality of what I actually do well.
The Hero Trap
I owe a lot to my heroes. I found people who had what I wanted, and I copied them. Looking back, I think I let these people make important decisions for me, because I didn’t know what I really wanted.
Gary Vaynerchuk convinced me that building a personal brand was mandatory.
Brian Clark convinced me a recurring membership community was the holy grail of digital business.
Scott Galloway convinced me to aggressively sell sponsorships against my media feeds.
I learned a lot from all these experiments. Most of all, I learned what I don’t want. It took me a long time, but through all the trial and error I stumbled upon what I do best and I want love to do most.
I am lead gen guy.
I make the phone ring. Whether it is programmatic directories, Google Ads, Meta funnels, technical SEO, or cold outbound campaigns, my single unfair advantage is sending high-intent buyers to real businesses.
I’m very good at it. And I love it.
Once I doubled down on that single lever, the noise vanished. My agencies began generating massive cash flow, giving me the liquidity to build a true personal holding company.
It took four decades, but I finally figured out who I am.
In Conclusion: This Is Simply What It Takes
The Universe plays some cruel joke on us. It makes it almost impossible to learn from other people’s experience.
As I get older, I realize my dad was right about almost everything. I can already see the future where my own son ignores my life experience and will be forced to learn his own lessons through pain.
Business works the same way.
For most of us, we need to learn lessons the hard way. We need to trudge through the mud and run through thorn bushes in order to find the easier softer path.
This requires us to say no. Unfortunately, building the courage to say no takes decades.
Now, I focus exclusively on scaling my lead gen agencies, expanding our directory assets, and deploying capital into businesses I understand.
Saying no is liberating. Letting go of shiny distractions is where real growth begins.
I wish you the good fortune of saying no.
Love you guys. Talk to you next week.
