I’m now getting more questions about AI than anything else.
People are nervous. There is a real fear that the world will run on AI, and that people will not be needed anymore.
I’m not here to make you feel better. I’m here to tell you where I see the opportunities, especially as it pertains to marketing agencies and AI.

Anytime there is a cosmic shift with technology, some industries get wiped out. But, new tech spawns new industries. This has always been the case. For example …

The scribe industry (at this time, almost every aristocrat had a scribe who would follow them and write down their thoughts for them)
The finance industry of religion and the monopoly on ideas (yes, this created a huge financial burden on the church)

The printing press
Newspapers
Journalism
Steam Engine Trains

Horse and buggy industry
The entire street cleaning industry (why do you think there are stoops in cities? because the horse poop piled up so high)

Conductors
Mass heavy manufacturing (now that we could move the inputs around such as coal, nickel, iron, etc)
The Internet

Print newspapers and classified ads
Video rental stores (e.g. Blockbuster)
Travel agencies (mass-market)
Encyclopedia salesmen

E-commerce
Online advertising
Social media platforms
Remote work and SaaS companies
We could go on forever. The same things happened with the mechanical loom, with smartphones, with bulldozers, the automobile, digital photography, the telegraph, the lightbulb, electricity, and the elevator.
Refrigerators killed the entire icing industry which was MASSIVE.
AI is no different.
What Technology Does
As we’ve just talked about, new technology kills industries and creates others. But it’s not a one to one relationship. What tech really does is create long tail industries, meaning it creates sub sectors of industries that require specialization.
For example, it’s not as though cell phones replaced land lines and that was it. The cell phone market created sub markets. No one could have predicted that the iPhone would have also created sub markets for applications, for digital music, for streaming.
Not to mention the hardware applications of the iPhone. It created an entire new market for specialized glass, for headphones, and cell phone cases.
You think Beats By Dre would exist without the iPhone?
So now that AI is here, and will continue to envelop itself inside our society and inside our markets, the question you need to be asking is how you can find the opportunities?
The Marketing Agency Opportunities I See
For the sake of this article, I am going to focus on marketing agencies. Many of my readers have interest in building their own marketing agencies, but know that these examples can be applied to any industry.
Specialized data sets: AI is useless without data. If you build a database, you can then leverage AI and use that data to provide for your clients. For example, if you own a directory of all the stem cell clinics in the country, and also create a database of all the statistics with chronic pain and applicable stem cell treatments, then you can create a high level product that you can use alongside your agency.
Dedicated GPTs for customer insights: Each one of your customers will have its own way of doing things. You could write rules and build custom GPTs specific to each customer. These GPTs could serve a multitude of functions, such as customer chat, marketing data, customer support, etc.
Dynamic landing page builders for specific industries: Let’s imagine you run an ad agency that specializes in retirement homes and assisted living facilities. You could create an AI script to automatically swap the copy in your landing pages to match the search query.
This is barely even touching the surface. These are three ideas that I came up with on the spot.
I think you will see the pattern. The trick is to use AI to create something that is specialized and gives your marketing agency a strategic edge.
You don’t want to think of yourself as a marketing company that simply bolts ChatGPT into their daily workflow and then calls yourself “AI enabled.”
Everyone can do this. And more and more, being like everyone else is a race to the bottom. You must use AI to separate yourself, and the way to do this is to build tools, products, and applications that are highly specialized so that you can charge top dollar.
I’ve never been more bullish on marketing agencies. What an amazing time to be alive.
