The longer I am in business, the more I am convinced that mental toughness is the main differentiator between winners and losers.
What unfolds in your life is shaped by what unfolds in your mind. The same experience can feel completely different depending on how you respond to it mentally and emotionally.
When business throws you challenges, and it will, your mindset determines everything.
Today I will tell you how to be mentally tough.

Do The Reps
Most of you have it backwards. You think you are mentally tough and therefore able to push through challenges. That is not the case. In reality, it is the opposite.
You gain mental toughness by doing difficult things.
The work always comes before the results.
This creates a paradox. You need toughness to do the hard thing, but you only gain toughness by doing the hard thing.
There is no shortcut. Some things in life require brute force, and this is one of them.
But you can ease the weight by focusing on simply showing up.
When I was getting sober, I could not imagine having ten or fifteen years clean. At first I could not go more than a few hours without withdrawals.
So I stopped thinking that far ahead. I just showed up to the next fellowship meeting. Walk through the doors, and the rest takes care of itself.
The same is true in business. When you are going through hell, just show up. Sit in the chair. Join the calls. Do the work. Keep showing up and the rest will follow.
Ignore The Results
Once you learn to show up, the next step is to detach from outcomes and trust the process.
In one of my portfolio companies, we are facing major challenges with construction at a hotel and a restaurant. Thinking of everything at once feels overwhelming.
So we do not think of everything. We focus only on the next step that moves us closer to the goal.
That is all you need to do.
The hard part is applying this day after day. Staying locked in on process can feel boring. You lose the rush of big wins when everything is broken down into steps.
But over time you realize it is more enjoyable. The highs are not extreme, the lows are not crushing. Business becomes a game. And the game is fun to play no matter the outcome.
Embrace Slow Improvements
Trusting the process only works if you give it time. That is where small daily improvements matter.
My goal is always to get one percent better every day.
My team hears this constantly, but I repeat it because it is the only way to build sustainable success.
The reason is simple.
Small improvements take the pressure off. Many of my worst mistakes came from big leaps; a major investment, a dramatic change in strategy, a sudden shift in direction. Big moves create instability. One percent better each day builds strength and resilience.
And the power of compounding is still underestimated. Big wins are easier when they are the sum of many small wins. Giant bets may look exciting, but they are stressful and often damaging. Small bets, stacked consistently, create momentum that compounds over time. The result is the same, but the process is steadier and far more satisfying.
In sum, self belief is not something you are born with. It is something you build.
The irony is that wealth is created through failure, but most people avoid failure at all costs.
Every day I fail. I probably have twenty failures for every one success. That is how the universe works. Destruction breeds creation. Learning requires failure. Success requires mistakes.
It is all part of the process.
