Apple Has Rebuilt Siri. What This Means For You And Your Business
Plus, Goodbye Tim Cook
Today, we are talking about the latest updates to Siri and your iPhone. This is the biggest update and new product release from Apple in years.
Siri Is Now Your Personal AI Assistant
I have said from the beginning that AI is only as valuable as its underlying dataset.
Your iPhone is a supercomputer that sits on a deep dataset of text messages, emails, photos, applications, and calendars. Now, you can communicate directly with Siri to have all this data at your fingertips.
The best way to understand this new update is to see it in action. There is a video in the press release that shows why this is so powerful. Watch it here.
As someone who generally thinks most AI announcements are overhyped, I admit that this is pretty awesome.
Apple Cashes In On Google’s Investment
Apple has taken a controversial stance by choosing not to invest billions of dollars into AI infrastructure.
Building and maintaining a frontier model requires a sustained capital and talent investment that Apple does not want to make. OpenAI has raised $180 billion and loses money at a negative 122% operating margin. Anthropic raised $65 billion at a $965 billion valuation and pays SpaceX $1.25 billion per month for compute. Apple has $170 billion in cash on its balance sheet and would rather redeploy that into hardware, services, and stock buybacks than into a model race it views as commoditizing. - Build Fast With AI
Instead, Tim Cook made a deal with Google where Apple will pay Google $1B a year to use Gemini as the default LLM.
The advantage Apple always had is that they own the rails. All the high end attention is on the iPhone, so all the other tech players have to go through the iPhone in order to be seen. Now, Apple is finally releasing a product that leverages this advantage.
Sure, this deal also works out for Google, who makes an easy $1B a year to lease Gemini. But Google and Apple have made deals like this in the past, and there is no reason to think this won’t be a great move for Apple.
AI That Actually Makes Your Life Better
I predict this will be a huge success because this AI product has real world applications for your daily life.
It is easy to see how regular folks like you and me could use Siri AI to find events, organize our calendars, recall information buried in our phones, and be more productive at work.
Personally, I think Apple has been playing this perfectly.
Let everyone else pay hundreds of billions to build out data centers and manage the compute. Apple owns the railroad system that everyone else needs to transport their product. Apple is the railroad of attention, so leasing out compute to Google while focusing on what makes Apple special is a perfect plan in my view.
Thanks for reading. Talk to you tomorrow.
