I love hearing people say “I don’t care what people think about me.”
That’s nonsense. Of course you do. I care, you care, we all care. It is a requirement to care because part of being a human is figuring out what groups and tribes you belong to.
The trick for me has been to acknowledge the fact that I do care, but not let that get in the way of creating the things I want to create.
It gets easier over time. If you force yourself to hit publish enough times, eventually the people who like your work will flock around you and the people who don’t will go elsewhere. This is a good thing. You shouldn’t be working to appeal to everyone, you should be working to find where you belong. It’s no use trying to convert people to like your work if they don’t like it.
The point is to find the people who like what you like. Find “the others” and speak to them.
You can only find your tribe if you are vulnerable enough to speak your truth, regardless of what people think about it.
So acknowledge that you do care, but say what you need to say anywhere.
