This is not click bait.
This is not some overly drawn out article filled with hyperbole and nonsense about “the secret to success.”
This is real.
The secret to building your brand is simple.
KEEP. YOUR. WORD.
The best way to build your reputation and your brand is to do what you say you are going to do.
Show up on time. If there is traffic, then leave early.
Deliver the results you promised. If you can’t deliver, then don’t make the promise or adjust so that you can.
Do the work required and the work that matters most.
Do the work you care about.
Most importantly, be yourself. Don’t ruin your own reputation by claiming to be something you’re not. It won’t work. People are not stupid and they will see right through you. The truth always reveals itself in time.
I know, because I’ve done it.
I’ve portrayed myself as the “young brilliant entrepreneur.”
I’ve hired photographers and acted as though I were a model. I even did the Instagram “cool guy holding his cell phone” pose.
None of that shit worked for me, because I don’t care about any of that.
I care about helping people live a great life by doing the work they love and making as much money as possible by contributing to the betterment of man and the planet.
So I stopped with all the pea cocking and posturing. I stopped pretending like I cared about things that I don’t care about. I started building myself around the ideas that mean the most to me, and my brand has grown as a result.
The same is true for every other brand I’ve ever started or will start in the future.
Keep. Your. Word.
Your brand will build around your priorities. Chose wisely.
