What I'm Thankful For
Recently, I’ve been experiencing a lot of moments of intense joy. It shows itself in ways I didn’t expect.
For instance, our little dude was throwing a fit last night because he wasn’t allowed in the kitchen. For obvious reasons, there is a lot of cooking and busyness going on in the kitchen, and it was my job to keep him out of the way.
When I picked him up to move him, he rebelled by flopping down on the ground and then rolling to his belly. He laid there, facedown on the floor, the same way someone collapses on the ground after they’ve finished a marathon and their body gives out on them. It was so pathetic and overly dramatic. He then turned onto his back in a full starfish position and the look on his face was as though he was being tortured. It was so funny. You had to see the look on his face.
Jules and I just looked at each other and laughed.
I had no choice but to grab him by his feet and drag him across the floor on his back. At which point, his face and his eyes lit up in a huge smile.
He’s ridiculous.
I never expected these to be the moments of clarity I have been searching for. Like “yes, I am exactly where I am supposed to be.”
I’m so thankful for those moments. My life is very full and I am constantly reminding myself how good I have it.
Off the top of my head …
I’m thankful for my family. I have the coolest wife and the most perfect little kids in the world. I honestly can not believe how lucky we are. To have simply found each other in the manner we did, and then be able to build this life for ourselves. I’m eternally grateful.
I’m grateful for the opportunity to move to a new place and experience life to the fullest.
I’m grateful that I get to do work that I love.
I’m grateful for Muay Thai. Being able to learn an intense martial art has been the most amazing and challenging experiences.
I’m grateful for books and for reading. I’m so happy my parents made me read as a kid.
I’m grateful to have both of my parents in my life. There are so many people who don’t have that, and I am aware of my good fortune.
I’m grateful for our dog Alice. She was the first addition to our family and I love how her and Jules are best buddies.
I’m grateful for all my teammates. Our enterprise spans across the world. I have two employees in the Philippines who are the most amazing people, and yesterday, they asked if Jules and I would be the “godparents” of their wedding. How incredible.
I’m thankful to be alive. It’s a strange thing, isn’t it? To simply be alive.
Obviously I could go on and on. The point is to take a moment, be present, and appreciate just how lucky we are. There are times in life when we don’t feel lucky, and when the challenges of being a person show themselves. Life is painful, for all of us.
But no matter who you are, you have plenty to be thankful for.
