The Perfect Day
Yesterday, I reached out to Charles for some advice.
Charles has been such a blessing for me. Without Charles, I don’t think Copyblogger would be nearly as successful as it is. Copyblogger needed his focus and his demeanor.
Charles gave me some advice yesterday that I am going to start implementing into my life.
He told me, “Start with the perfect day, and work your way backwards.”
I do exactly the opposite. I start with what I need to get done and go from there. The day is determined by my power list, which I write the night before. But the timing and flow of the day are completely determined by whatever happens next.
So it got me thinking, what does my perfect day look like?
LFG. 🔥
4:30 am. Wake up and write
I love the mornings and I thoroughly enjoy my daily writing practice. It’s the only time in my life when no one is asking me questions, when I don’t look at Slack, and when I can sit in stillness.
I’ve often tried to use the mornings to work out, do breathwork, or jump in the ice bath, but I always come back to my writing. It’s the best time of the day.
6:00. Get the kiddos up
This is about when they wake up on their own. This can either be a beautiful time or a stressful time, depending on my outlook on the day.
When I am present and allow the kiddos to be kids, it’s such a fun part of the day. In contrast, if I am rushed or stressed or have an agenda, this can be a tough time because I find myself getting frustrated.
The perfect day has zero commitments or expectations in the morning. This time is for us to play, eat, and enjoy the mornings together as a family.
8:00. Go to the gym
I feel best about myself when I have a fitness program that is repeatable and consistent. I prefer to go to a small gym in the neighborhood, but I do like going to an actual gym as opposed to working out at home.
9:30. Eat, shower, dress
I need to be dressed to be my best self. I don’t know how people work from home and sit around all day in mesh shorts or sweat pants. Not me, I put on pants and a clean tee shirt / thermal every day.
10:00. Sit down to work
This is when I dig in and do deep work. This includes conference calls, managing the team, and being locked in and focused.
I find that when you only give yourself three hours in the afternoon to get everything done, you get everything done in three hours. This is where all the money is made, in this window of time.
1:00. Eat lunch and go for a walk
I like to sit down and enjoy my food. Food is sacred and I don’t think our culture does a good enough job of appreciating the sacredness of nutrition and of life giving life.
This is when Jules and I usually go for walks or when I go for a walk around the lake.
2:00. Sit back down to work
This is when I like to record videos, do editing, and focus on creative work. For whatever reason, my creative mind comes out once all the logistics are done.
4:30. Get the kiddos
After I pick them up, I love to take them to a neighborhood playground. It’s so good to get them right back to being outside. Denver has tons of parks, so we can choose a new slide or playground every day.
6:30. Train Muay Thai
Hit the bag, do pad work, and drill.
7:30. Eat dinner as a family
I have this fantasy land where I think dinner time with a 4 1/2 year old and a 3 year old will be this peaceful time where we can talk about our day and ask the kiddos what they learned in school.
Inevitably it turns into a fiasco. But we love it.
8:00. Start the bedtime routine
take a bath
brush your teeth
put on your jammies
read books
talk about cars (I put The Little Dude to bed most nights and we always talk about his Hot Wheels together. It’s my absolute favorite.)
Go potty
Go to bed. 🛌
8:45. Drink cocoa tea and sit down with Jules to talk about our day together.
We end each day with a cup of Four Sigmatic Mushroom Cocoa team. It’s delicious and it gives us a little nighttime treat that feels like desert but also helps us sleep.
9:15. Go to bed and read
We’re both book worms, so we are always reading in bed at night. Sometimes I fall asleep after reading two sentences and other times I read for almost an hour. Either way, it’s great
K. That’s The Perfect Day
I am going to try and set this schedule and fit my life into the perfect day. I will let you know how it goes.
Love you guys. Talk to you tomorrow.
Go birds. 🦅
