The hardest part of creating art ...
… is getting started.
Why?
Because everything sucks in the beginning. I don’t know anyone ever who has published their best work on their first draft. To do good writing, you first have to do bad writing, and there’s nothing fun about creating bad art.
Eventually, you find a cadence. Eventually, you’re not starting from the beginning, but rather picking up where you left off.
Writing every day becomes easier when you write every day. But in order to get there, you have to write every day. (How meta).
One of the liberations that has come to me over the years is being able to let go of expectations on results of my work. That’s not to say that I don’t want to succeed. I do, very much want to succeed.
But when you get enough reps in, you learn that it is the reps themselves that guarantee success.
I have no idea which one of my articles will be well received or which one of my products will make the most money. I have absolutely no clue why some of my tweets go viral and why other ones flop.
It doesn’t matter, because if I simply publish every day, the probability of success is almost 100%. So there is no pressure to get it right, because I won’t be able to even if I try.
When you learn that getting is right is simply to show up every day, the work becomes enjoyable and the results become much more significant.
