The Best Way Through Difficult Challenges Is To Extend Your Time Horizon
Note to self. Be patient.
I’m in a bit of a funk.
The emotional effects of selling my company, combined with other challenges over the last month, have put me in a strange mindset.
Today, I am writing an essay to remind myself about the value of consistency and patience.
LFG. 🔥
The Reality About Client Services
As you know, I encourage anyone looking to start a business to get into client services. There are many upsides to running an agency, and I have spoken about them at length.
However, there are also downsides.
The biggest downside is the lack of loyalty.
To be clear, no one owes you anything. If a client fires you, it is not personal. Everyone makes decisions based on what they believe is best for their life and goals. It is important to understand this before going in.
But knowing that does not make it sting any less.
As an agency, you are expendable. I have experienced countless situations where I delivered extraordinary results, yet for one reason or another, the client decided to take their business elsewhere.
There is nothing you can do about that. It is part of the game.
This Makes Most People Quit the Business for Something With "More Stability"
I have seen this happen many times.
After losing deals, an agency owner will decide that they do not want to work with clients anymore. They start an Instagram page, create an eBook, and start selling digital products.
For the record, I also advocate for eventually changing your business model to allow for something more scalable. This is exactly what I have done. However, the purpose of today’s essay is to remind you that every business model has its own challenges, and completely changing the plan is not the right solution to the problem of losing deals.
Rather, continuously adjusting over weeks, months, years, and decades is what will actually get you to where you want to go.
Gary Vaynerchuk Is a Great Example
One of the reasons I admire Gary is because he has such a long time horizon.
Fifteen years ago, he was starting his agency. VaynerMedia specializes in creative content, social media, and digital marketing.
Over time, he expanded his scope of services to include many different ventures.
For example, he added an eCommerce wing called VaynerCommerce. Then, he launched VeeFriends, his NFT project. He purchased companies like PureWow and then created an adjacent brand called One37PM.
Eventually, Gary created a holdings company called VaynerX, which houses his portfolio of media companies.
Throughout it all, Gary stayed true to what brought him to the dance: his agency.
If you look at Gary’s social media, you will not find much content highlighting the challenges of working in client services. But I am sure he has been screwed over, blindsided, deceived, and has had deals fall apart.
No question.
But Gary extended his time horizon and continued to invest in himself, his company, his brand, and his portfolio.
This is how it is done, and this is what I am doing.
Love you guys. Talk to you tomorrow.
