Status is changing
We all chase status.
There’s a reason for it, and it’s important to understand so you prevent yourself from judging yourself too hard when you catch yourself “chasing shiny objects.”
For the vast majority of humanity, status was a much greater indicator of success than anything else. If you had status, you were able to stay alive. That’s why we care about it so much, even though status has basically no utility in the modern world.
In modern times, the greatest indicator of survival is wealth.
So, as a biproduct, we confuse wealth with status. This manifests itself in funny ways.
rolex watches
expensive food
private jets
cars that are 100X the price and 1/100 of a fraction faster
But an interesting thing happens with technology. What use it is to have a private jet that will help you show up on a meeting in a days notice, when anyone in the world can jump on zoom?
What happens to the status of watches when the cell phone in your pocket is digital, fast and always accurate?
It’s an interesting thought experiment?
How do we find ways to showcase our status when more money doesn’t but you better things? it simply buys you weirder things?
Its something to think about. I find it fascinating.
