I've Changed My Mind on Sponsorships
For most of my writing career, I’ve avoided sponsorships. I disliked them for two reasons …
Because when you sell ads against your content, you’re no longer incentivized to create the best content, but rather you are incentivized to make the most sensationalized content.
Dollar for dollar, it’s more profitable to use your content as a way to promote your own products or services as opposed to promoting someone else’s.
Over the last year, my view on this has changed completely.
It was Ethan who first opened my eyes to the world of sponsorships. I’ve written in depth about the actual framework here. Now, I realize that sponsorships are actually an important part of entrepreneurship, because they give people a way to get started.
A writer with only 3000 email subscribers can write a daily newsletter and still make $40,000 a year. Best of all, if you’re building an email list, that means you can always promote products that you know your audience will be interested in.
It’s very effective.
If you want to get started, I recommend creating a convertkit account and then trying to sell sponsorships. It’s enough to get you moving in the right direction.
