I Sold Copyblogger 💵
Here's everything you need to know about the deal and the future of Copyblogger
It’s official. Last week, I signed the deal. I am no longer the majority owner in Copyblogger Media LLC.
In this issue, I’ll explain the details of the deal, why I did it, and what I’m doing next.
LFG. 🔥
The Details Of The Copyblogger Sale
To be clear, I sold 70% of the company. I retain 30% ownership and will have a small but active role going forward.
I sold the majority interest to my friend Darrell Vesterfelt. Darrell is the man. He’s a great friend and a great entrepreneur. Most importantly, he’s obsessed with customer happiness. Under his leadership, I know Copyblogger will be better than ever and serve more people than ever.
So let me give you the details. I’m sure you’re dying to know the sale price. I won’t share the specifics of the deal, but between the growth over the last 5 years, my equity in Digital Commerce, the exit sale, and sponsorship revenue, I doubled my money plus some.
Through Copyblogger, I also gained access to other strategic partnerships. I’ve become an investor in Kit.com, MightyNetworks.com, and DigitalCommerce.com.
It’s a win and I feel good about it. Most of all, I feel good that I still have a significant piece of the company. I was able to structure this deal to put Copyblogger in a position to help more people.
Copyblogger changed my life. I feel a responsibility to continue serving those new to entrepreneurship and content marketing.
Why Did I Sell Copyblogger?
Here’s the truth.
Copyblogger is a brand about writing and content marketing. The search traffic, the community, and even the name are completely tailored around people who want to improve their writing skills and learn content marketing.
Granted, the company has evolved as the landscape of content marketing has changed. But for the most part, people come to Copyblogger to grow their businesses through writing.
I’m obviously a believer and a practitioner in the craft of online writing and content marketing. However, over the last 10 years, I’ve become very interested in investing, building agencies, and closing high ticket deals.
Recently, a small misalignment developed between what Copyblogger subscribers need and what I have to give.
I love closing big deals and building agencies. But the Copyblogger audience wants to learn how to build courses and communities and also bring in freelancer writing clients. Darrell lives and breathes courses and communities.
I knew I needed help. When I brought the idea to Darrell, he jumped on it.
For the most part, I’ve made my money through high ticket client services, lead generation, and investing. Darrell has deep experience on the digital product side.
For example …
Darrell was one of the first employees in ConvertKit and grew the company from $1 to $7 million.
Darrell built a badass community for homesteaders. The community has two products: a membership and a magazine. Go check out The School Of Traditional Skills and Homestead Living.
Darrell is the VP of Growth for Mighty Networks and has helped scale that company to multiple millions.
Many people who read Copyblogger are freelancers, creators, Substackers, and people who want to sell courses or memberships to a community.
Darrell is much more aligned with that side of entrepreneurship. The fit is perfect.
I couldn’t be happier with how it all worked out.
What’s Next For Me?
We have a lot of work to do to smoothly transition the Copyblogger brand.
It’s been a tumultuous few months, and I’m sure some customers are confused by the changes. We need to ground the company and align the community with their own goals and aspirations.
The truth is content marketing (and especially writing) is more relevant than ever. AI isn’t killing content marketing. In fact, it’s the opposite. It’s creating a premier market for real writers and real business owners who use content to grow their companies.
Freelance writers, info product entrepreneurs, and membership communities will grow more than ever because people are longing for in person connection and personalized products.
I’ve never been more excited about the content marketing landscape. Copyblogger will continue to be a place where content marketers can improve their skills, grow their brands, build their businesses, and make more money.
I can’t wait to update you with all the new programs and features we are releasing. And yes, events are coming too!
Love you guys. Talk to you next week.
