Why Content Marketing Is The Best Place To Start
Creating content is low risk and high reward. Content marketing has intrinsic benefits that make it different from advertising, networking, or in person sales.
When you create content, you establish yourself as an authority in a particular space.
My first online business was called Sober Nation. It was a blog and a directory of rehab facilities designed to help people struggling with addiction. I built Sober Nation by writing blog posts, building an online directory, and sharing other people’s recovery stories on our Facebook page.
Over time, I built a massive community in the addiction recovery space. The people in the community wanted to know my opinion, and they respected my viewpoint. I earned this reputation by showing up day after day and creating value for the world.
Because of this reputation, I was able to create my first agency called Stodzy Internet Marketing. Stodzy specialized in helping addiction treatment centers get found online. That agency generated tens of millions in revenue.
It really is this simple. I made my first few million dollars by writing weekly blog posts, sending a weekly email, and building a community of professionals in a specific field I wanted to be known in. When you create content, you are by definition building yourself as an expert in a field.
That expertise makes it much easier to build an audience and make sales. And guess what. I’ve repeated this process over and over again to build multiple companies.
Content marketing creates authority, authority creates sales, and sales turn into revenues and profits.
It’s simple. If I can do it, you can do it too.
Content Marketing Makes Sales So Much Easier
Back when I was running Stodzy Internet Marketing, I generated most of our inbound leads through SEO.
Owners of drug rehab centers would go to Google and search something like “drug rehab marketing agency.” My website would consistently show up as the first result.
When prospects called to inquire about my services, they entered the conversation with the assumption that I knew what I was talking about.
They found me through free articles, videos, and social media posts. They already saw me as an authority in online marketing for addiction treatment centers.
So when I presented my proposals, they took me seriously because they were the ones who reached out. It was my expertise and my willingness to give away free value through content that motivated them to call me in the first place.
Content marketing is how you generate high intent inbound leads. By nature, inbound leads come from people actively searching for what you offer, which makes them far more likely to buy.
Content is a cheat code, but only if you do it right.
Short Form Content Grows Your Following, But Long Form Content Grows Your Bank Account
I have nothing against social media, short form videos, tweets, or Instagram stories. These formats do a great job of keeping you in front of your prospects. I actively create and post short form content for my own companies.
However, the real cheat code in content marketing is creating long form content that solves real problems.
For example, my new agency is called Quantum Leads. We build sales and marketing campaigns for local healthcare clinics.
Two months ago, I recorded a ten minute video showing ketamine clinic owners exactly how to generate leads. I gave away the entire playbook. And guess what. That boring long form video, tailored to a very specific avatar, consistently generates two clients for me totaling $8200 per month.
Granted, this is just one video. But the compounding effects of creating long form authority building content are staggering.
My friend Ramit Sethi once gave me a piece of advice that I never forgot.
I asked him about his long form blog posts. I said, “Yeah, but who actually reads the whole thing?”
He said, “Buyers.”
That’s the difference between being a creator and being an entrepreneur.
Entrepreneurs understand that content is a means to an end. Content marketing is the act of creating content to build authority so you can generate leads and sales.
Creators create content so the content itself can be shared, liked, and go viral.
Don’t confuse popularity with authority. Don’t confuse likes and shares with sales and revenue.
You can create content that earns attention in the moment, or you can create content that compounds into sales and profits.
It’s up to you.
