Getting Back in the Flow
My life runs best when I maintain a handful of daily habits.
Write a blog post every morning.
Start each morning with some quick journaling and write my “power list”, (which is simply the 5 tasks I must complete each day).
Go to the gym at 8 am each morning.
Drink a jug (it’s a metal container that I carry around with me) of water.
That’s it. That’s all I need to do. When I do these things every day, I am most happy and my anxiety levels are lowest.
I have been on point with #2 - #4, but not #1.
Here’s what happens …
I start to get busy and then I feel like I have to take advantage of the mornings. I want to get as much done as possible before 6:30 am, because that’s when my son usually wakes up. And so I skip my morning blog post and instead, work on answering emails and booking appointments for sales calls.
It’s counter intuitive, because the act of getting my daily blog post done makes it so the rest of my day is more effective. So “getting things done” in the morning usually leads to not getting things done in the afternoon.
If only I had the self awareness and the discipline to remain focused each morning, my life would continue to run smooth. But my angst and anxiety always wants me to GO GO GO! right this instant, because I feel like I’m always running out of time.
I don’t know how else to explain it.
Writing a morning blog post is the best. I do it for no other reason other than Seth Godin, Fred Wilson and Austin Kleon do it. I don’t need a better reason than that.
So here we go. I am recommitting to recommitting to writing every morning. I’m not going to put pressure on myself other than to recognize the value it brings to my life and the serenity it gives me to be always reflecting on how to be a better person.
