Forget The Cashflow: This Is The Real Reason To Build An Agency
It's not always about the money
Yesterday, my buddy David mentioned me in his newsletter.
Now, I am mentioning him.
In the issue, David made some amazing points about the second order effects and the indirect value you generate from starting, building, and running an agency. I could not agree more.
Today, I will show you the extra benefits of building an agency business.

The Skills Are More Important Than The Money
A quick recap:
In David’s newsletter, he cited an article I wrote last month. In that post, I argued that agencies were great businesses because they are excellent at generating cashflow. You can then use that cash to reinvest into more scalable businesses.
This is what I have done, and this is also what David has done.
But the point David made is that when you run an agency, you ALSO learn invaluable skills that stack up and compound over time.
These are the skills you cannot learn in school. These are the skills you do not even realize you need until you find yourself in situations that you intuitively know how to handle. I think we can categorize these skills into soft skills and hard skills.
Soft skills:
managing emotions
managing the emotions of your employees
conflict resolution
sales
empathy and relatability
small talk and conversation
having hard conversations
checking a client who is overstepping scope creep
learning the most valuable lesson: nothing is ever as good or as bad as it seems.
In addition, you learn technical hard skills, such as:
invoicing
task management
SOP creation (literally the most valuable skill)
yearly filings to the IRS
accounting
the technical skills involved in SEO, social media, advertising, or whatever service you are selling
lead management
As you get older, you start to realize that the skills you develop and your ability to navigate the dynamic world around you are actually the most valuable assets you have.
These Skills Make It So You Can Prosper In Any Situation
You can put me in any situation, and I am confident I can come out ahead.
For example, when I sold Stodzy last year, I had no idea what I was going to do. But I knew whatever I chose, I was going to be successful.
There have been ups and downs, and I have had to humble myself to relearn some things I have not dealt with in a few years. Nonetheless, I knew I had the skills to make it happen.
So what did I do?
I created a new LLC. Then I created a website. After that, I started creating content and using my network. Then I started pitching potential clients and closing deals.
Now I am back in business with another successful agency doing work that I love.
It is a bumpy road, but without the skills, you are DOA.
So Yes, An Agency Is Still The Best Place To Start
Building an agency is a crash course in entrepreneurship.
You learn the skill of business, which is just another way of saying that you learn the art of selling, psychology, writing, and building.
The best part is, the more you learn, the more you get paid. Then the more you get paid, the more you learn. You are being paid to constantly improve your skillset.
It is like the opposite of college.
If you want to be an entrepreneur, I encourage you to start with an agency. It is a great business model that is highly lucrative and has loads of indirect benefits and upside.
