Burning The Ships
Let's get personal.
A few months ago, I needed to have a real conversation with my wife.
I had been feeling in limbo. Part of me was still feeling resentful and hurt about how my former partners and friends at Stodzy (and another company) treated me when I exited those positions.
But there was also another part of me that felt so excited about the future. I am so amped about healthcare marketing, and I want to be the best in the world at my craft.
I wanted to let go of the past, but I was emotionally stuck.
Jules told me that it is time to burn the ships.
LFG. 🔥
When You Decide To Do Something, The Universe Gets Out Of Your Way
I was hugely impacted by the book Think and Grow Rich. I know many people scoff at that book these days, but the underlying theme is one of the most valuable lessons I have ever learned.
The lesson is as follows:
“Thoughts have a physical impact on the universe. What you think can be measured, and therefore, can shape the world around you.”
It is not woo woo; it is a physical law of the universe. Thoughts can be measured in waves, and waves move atoms. Therefore, thoughts are things.
What you think will, in many ways, manifest your reality.
I realized during that conversation with Jules a lesson that I already knew to be true.
I was stuck in my thoughts, and that is why I could not move forward.
When The Universe Moves For You
It was an instant reaction.
That day, I made the decision to move forward, to let go of the past, and to fully commit to what I wanted in life.
Of course, this filled me with fear. Most of us stay in negative situations because there is a form of comfort there. All of us develop bad habits because they serve us in some way. I am no different.
Letting go of these resentments was, in some weird way, letting go of something comforting.
I felt comfortable in a world where I had those relationships, those conversations, and those moments I could depend on. But there is a big difference between comfort, safety, and flourishing.
If you want to flourish, you have to be uncomfortable. You have to put yourself in danger.
Memento Mori - “Remember That You Will Die”
As you get older, and especially after you have kids, you realize that your death will come for you much sooner than you realize. There is an urgency and a beauty in that because it makes the moment feel so precious.
I burned the ships, and in truth, I still have more ships to burn. That is for another essay.
As soon as I made the choice, my business doubled, seemingly overnight.
What is more is that my anxiety completely went away. I fall asleep instantly, and I wake up every morning excited to create, to be a dad, to be a husband, to enjoy my food, to move my body, and to experience life with the most fullness I possibly can.
Burn the fucking ships. There is no way back.
Love you guys. Have a great weekend.
