This is my dad.
He texted me a few hours ago saying “Hey I’m in Nashville.” No warning. No plans. He just showed up. Clearly, I got my excellent planning skills from my father. He’s gonna kill me when he reads this in the morning. 🙂
Anyway, my dad is sitting next to me working on his paper. He has been working on papers for the last few years. My dad is a blue collar guy. He has been a paramedic for 30 years. He has always felt bad about not having a college degree. Ever since I was young, he always talked about how he wanted to have his bachelors. Pretty soon, his dream will be a reality.
My dad has another year or so of school. After that, he will officially be a college graduate.
My dad just taught me all about one of his classes called “world politics.” He taught me about the “anarchist movement.” It turns out, anarchists don’t actually believe in violence or disorder, they just don’t believe in a centralized government or ruling body.
So we got to talking about it and I said “yeah it’s a cool idea but an anarchist government would never work.”
My dad says “Aha! But if you think about it, the entire world is an anarchist society, because the entire world does not have a centralized governing body. The UN is an attempt to do that, but in reality, the world still operates within an anarchist system.”
I said “I never thought of it that way pop.”
He said “you learn something new every day.”
I can’t tell you how fucking proud that makes me. He’s a hero. Both my parents are.
If you see something you want, just go get it. Don’t waste time on silly excuses or justifications about how it’s “too late” or how “it doesn’t really matter.”
It does matter. Every second matters. Every interesting fact you learn or every new perspective you gain will only add value to your life.
It’s never too late.
